The CCV Code* is an added protection for when you're doing a transaction online or over the phone. Because the merchant doesn't actually see your card in these situations, it's harder to be sure that the person using the card number is actually the card holder (rather than someone who just happens to know your card number). To address this problem, credit card providers put a three or four digit number on the card (usually on the back, sometimes on the front) that is not embossed (raised) and doesn't print on the docket. It doesn't get printed on EFTPOS receipts either. So someone trying to use your card number fraudulently is much less likely to know this number. (This really underscores the importance of notifying your credit card provider promptly if you ever lose your card.)
*CCV stands for Credit Card Verification. Sometimes its also known as the Credit Card Check Value or Card Verification Value or Card Verification Code!
Your CCV is found in different places depending on what type of credit card you have. For most cards - such as Visa, Mastercard - the CCV is a three- or four-digit number on the back of your card. Sometimes the full credit card number is reprinted in the signature box and the CCV is printed at the end of the number.
