Western riding is becoming increasingly popular in Australia and Quarter Horses and other western breeds are keenly sought.  One of the pioneers of Quarter Horse breeding in Australia, the Myer family, established one of Australia's first Quarter Horse studs here in the Clarence Valley, at Yulgilbar Station at Baryulgil.   The Yulgilbar Quarter Horses were later moved closer to the family's base in Victoria.

There are active Western Riding, Paint Horse, Cutting and Natural Horsemanship clubs in the Clarence Valley.  The annual Lawrence Rodeo is held in Maclean at the end of December and attracts competitors from all over Australia.
