The Hunter Valley of NSW is the world's largest producer of
thoroughbreds after Kentucky in the USA. The sport of kings is one of Australia's
most popular pastimes, and the Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation on the
first Tuesday of November.
Maureen grew up on a thoroughbred stud near Tamworth where her father stood the
outstanding homebred Todman sire 'The Toddler'. When she wasn't at boarding
school in Sydney, she strapped for her father's team of horses, including N&NWDRA cups
king, Beau Jet, and the record breaking speedsters such as Sir Biarritz and Golden
Bonnie.
Maureen's other claim to fame is that she went to school with the daughters of
Australia's elite racing families, such as the Smith's (Tommy's daughter Gai Smith -- now
Gai Waterhouse), the Pagans (owner of Melbourne Cup winner Padtheway), the Kelly's
(Newhaven Park Stud, Booroowa) the Clifts (owners of Sunset Hue - sire of Gundsynd).
Maureen's Saturdays were spent exclusively at the races or travelling to the
prestigious Hunter Valley studs with her father to check out new stallions and drop
off broodmares.
Though no longer closely involved in racing, Maureen has made an effort to stock racing
saddlery, memorabilia, art and gifts. Hats and fashions will also be available
for the famous Grafton July Racing Carnival, the richest rural cup carnival in Australia.
